Explain hiking on durable surfaces
One hiker stepping off-trail leaves barely a mark. A thousand hikers doing the same thing, in the same spot, over a season — that turns a patch of undergrowth into a bare, eroded scar that takes years to recover, if it ever does.
Why Durable Surfaces Matter
A durable surface is one that can absorb foot traffic without being damaged: rock, gravel, sand, dry grass, established trail tread, or snow. Fragile surfaces — wet meadows, cryptobiotic soil crust in deserts, streambank vegetation — get damaged easily and recover slowly, sometimes over decades. Sticking to durable surfaces spreads impact where the land can handle it and keeps the rest undisturbed.
Spotting Durable Surfaces
On your own outing, look for examples like:
- A hard-packed dirt or gravel trail tread.
- Bare rock or slickrock.
- A previously established campsite rather than fresh ground.
Compare that to fragile ground you deliberately avoided — soft meadow grass, streamside plants, moss — and be ready to describe both from your actual hike, not from a textbook example.
