# Complete Scoutmaster conference

Part of the Star Scout guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/star/guide/index.md)

*Advancement & Review*

> **7.** While a First Class Scout, participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

The Scoutmaster conference is a supportive, one-on-one conversation between you and your Scoutmaster (or an assistant Scoutmaster designated by the Scoutmaster). It is not an examination or a re-test of your skills; rather, it is a mentoring session to evaluate your progress, reflect on your growth, and chart your course toward Life and Eagle.

## The Purpose of the Star Scoutmaster Conference

At Star Scout, the conference transitions from checking basic scoutcraft skills to discussing your development as a leader and a person:

- **Reviewing Active Tenure**: Discussing your participation over the past four months, your campout experiences, and your engagement with your patrol.
- **Evaluating Leadership**: Reflecting on your position of responsibility ([Requirement 5](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/star/guide/req5/))—what went well, what challenges you faced, how you communicated with other Scouts, and what leadership skills you developed.
- **Assessing Scout Spirit & Duty to God**: Reviewing your real-world examples of living the Scout Oath and Law ([Requirement 2](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/star/guide/req2/)).
- **Goal Setting for Life and Eagle**: Looking ahead to the Life rank, mapping out your next five merit badges, planning conservation service hours, and preparing for the Teaching EDGE method.

## Policy: When the Conference Can Occur

According to the official *Guide to Advancement* (topic 4.2.3.5):
- The Scoutmaster conference may take place at any time during your tenure as a First Class Scout. While it is often the final step before the board of review, it does not have to be the last requirement completed.
- A Scoutmaster conference cannot be used to "fail" a Scout or deny advancement arbitrarily. If areas of growth are identified, the Scoutmaster provides clear guidance on how to fulfill the rank expectations.

## How to Prepare

Approach the conference with professionalism and thoughtful reflection:

**Conference Preparation Checklist** — Items to bring and review

- [ ] Wear your full field uniform (Class A) with all current patches properly positioned.
- [ ] Bring your advancement records, signed blue card stubs, and service log.
- [ ] Prepare two or three specific examples of living the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Duty to God in your daily life.
- [ ] Be ready to describe what you accomplished during your four months in your position of responsibility.
- [ ] Have a draft plan for your next merit badges and leadership goals for Life Scout.

> **Tip**
>
> Treat this conversation as an open dialogue. If you experienced difficulties in your troop leadership role or struggled with a particular merit badge, share that openly. Your Scoutmaster is there to coach and support your advancement.
