# Explain when to use a fire

Part of the Second Class guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/second-class/guide/index.md)

*2. Cooking and Tools*

> **2a.** Explain when it is appropriate to use a fire for cooking or other purposes and when it would not be appropriate to do so.

Before striking a match, an ethical Scout must evaluate whether a wood campfire is the right tool for the situation. While campfires are a cherished outdoor tradition, modern camp stoves are faster, cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and leave zero impact on the land. Knowing when to build a fire and when to rely on a camp stove is a critical outdoor judgment call.

## When It Is Appropriate to Use a Fire

A wood or charcoal fire is appropriate when **all** of the following conditions are met:

- **Cooking Style Demands Coals:** You are baking with a Dutch oven (requiring heat from coals placed on the lid and beneath the pot) or cooking foil dinner packets directly in embers.
- **Permitted by Land Managers:** The campground or backcountry area explicitly permits open fires, and there are no active local, state, or federal fire bans (such as Stage 1 or Stage 2 fire restrictions).
- **Established Fire Rings Exist:** An existing, designated metal fire ring, stone fire ring, or elevated fire pan is available, preventing new ground scarring.
- **Abundant Dead and Down Wood:** There is plenty of fallen wood on the ground that can be broken by hand. You never cut live branches or strip standing dead trees.
- **Safe Weather Conditions:** Winds are light or calm, humidity is reasonable, and there is no Red Flag Warning in effect.
- **Adequate Extinguishing Water & Tools:** You have a full bucket of water and a camp shovel standing by at the fire ring *before* lighting.

## When It Is NOT Appropriate to Use a Fire

A campfire should **not** be built under any of the following circumstances:

- **Active Fire Restrictions or Burn Bans:** During dry seasons or droughts, forest services frequently issue fire restrictions that strictly prohibit open flames and wood fires. These rules are legally binding.
- **High Winds and Dry Conditions:** Strong gusts can carry burning embers and sparks hundreds of yards into dry brush, igniting catastrophic wildfires.
- **Alpine & Sensitive Habitats:** At high altitudes (above treeline), in arid deserts, or in fragile riparian zones, wood grows very slowly. Fallen wood is scarce and provides vital shelter and nutrients for plants and wildlife.
- **Heavily Used Backcountry Sites:** In high-use wilderness areas, collecting firewood strips the surrounding landscape and creates unsightly soot scars and ash piles.
- **Quick Meals or Backcountry Travel:** When preparing a quick breakfast or boiling water for dehydrated backpacking meals, a lightweight canister stove boils water in minutes without smoke, soot, or lengthy coal preparation.
- **Lack of Time to Fully Extinguish:** If you are leaving camp shortly or do not have enough water to drown the embers until cold to the touch, do not start a fire.

| Feature | Campfire (Wood / Charcoal) | Camp Stove (Canister / Propane) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Best For** | Dutch oven baking, foil dinners, evening troop programs | Boiling water, sautéing, quick breakfasts, all-weather cooking |
| **Environmental Impact** | Consumes natural wood, produces ash, blackens cookware | Zero ground scarring, leaves no soot, highly efficient |
| **Setup & Cleanup Time** | 45–60 mins to build, establish coals, and extinguish cold | Lights in seconds; shuts off instantly when finished |
| **Fire Ban Compliance** | Frequently prohibited during dry months | Usually permitted under most Stage 1 restrictions |

> **Safety First!**
>
> Never light a fire unless you have verified local regulations and have the resources to put it out completely. Always keep a bucket of water and a shovel directly beside the fire site before lighting.
