# Introduction & Overview

The Second Class guide.

*Getting Started*

## Overview

Second Class is where the campouts you started as a Tenderfoot turn into real outdoor skill: building and putting out your own cooking fire, reading a map and compass on a real hike, swimming safely, and handling first aid for injuries more serious than a scraped knee. It's called "Second Class" for historical reasons, not because it's a lesser badge — this rank covers more ground than any other, and it's the one where Scouting starts to feel like an adventure you're equipped for, not just one you're along for.

## Building on the Last Rank

You already pitched a tent, tied three knots, and treated basic first aid as a Tenderfoot. Second Class doesn't retest those skills — it raises them: new knots for real rigging jobs, first aid for more serious injuries, a longer hike, a real fitness plan you carry forward from [Tenderfoot requirement 6c](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/tenderfoot/guide/req6c/). Scout spirit, the Scoutmaster conference, and the board of review all return here too, each asking a little more of you than they did last time. Where a requirement builds directly on something you covered as a Tenderfoot, this guide points back to that page instead of repeating it.

## Get Ready!

Several of these requirements only come together on an actual campout — the fire, the meal, the hike, the swim test. Look at your troop's upcoming outing schedule before you start, and plan which trip covers which requirements.
