> **5.** Tell what you need to know about using a pocketknife safely and responsibly.

A pocketknife is one of the most useful and versatile tools in Scouting, but it requires strict discipline and respect to handle safely.

## Safe Knife Use Checklist

- **Keep blades closed** whenever the knife is not actively being used or cleaned.
- **Open only one blade at a time.** Never leave a tool with multiple blades exposed.
- **Always cut away from yourself**, never toward your body or hands. Keep your non-cutting hand completely behind the blade's path.
- **Establish your safety zone (blood circle).** Before opening a blade, extend your arm in a full circle around you (or hold the closed knife and sweep your arms). If anyone is within reach, ask them to step back.
- **Pass it closed, handle first.** Never pass an open knife. When handing a closed tool to another Scout, wait until they have a secure hold and say "Thank you" before you release your grip.
- **Never throw a knife** or use the point of a blade as a prying tool (it can snap or bend).
- **Never strike a blade** with another tool or baton.
- **Know the rules:** Obey all regulations regarding knives in public places, schools, and airports. Always carry your knife closed in your pocket or pack sheath.

## Caring for Your Knife

A well-maintained tool is both safer and more effective to use:

- **Keep it sharp:** A sharp blade slices cleanly with minimal effort. A dull blade requires excessive force, slips unpredictably, and is the primary cause of whittling accidents.
- **Cleaning:** Open the blades and wrap a small piece of clean cloth around the tip of a wooden toothpick. Moisten the cloth and wipe lint and grit out of the inner casing channel.
- **Food prep hygiene:** If you use your knife to slice food or spread peanut butter, wash the blades thoroughly in hot, soapy dishwater, dry completely, and add a single drop of light mineral oil to the pivot joints.

> **Safety First!**

> If you cut yourself, stop immediately, apply direct pressure to the wound with clean gauze, elevate the area if possible, and tell an adult leader right away — even for minor nicks.
