The Pledge of Allegiance is a solemn declaration of patriotism, loyalty, and shared civic responsibility. While most Scouts have recited it in school classrooms since kindergarten, Requirement 1f asks you to understand the profound meaning behind every phrase and practice the proper flag etiquette when reciting it.
The Text of the Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Phrase-by-Phrase Meaning
- “I pledge allegiance”
- Meaning: I make a formal, personal promise of loyalty, devotion, and continuous support.
- “to the flag of the United States of America”
- Meaning: The American flag is the living visual emblem of our country. Honoring the flag honors our shared history, the diversity of our fifty states, and the sacrifices of veterans and citizens who built and protected our nation.
- “and to the republic for which it stands”
- Meaning: A republic is a form of government where supreme power resides with the citizens, who exercise their authority through freely elected representatives governed by the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution, rather than being ruled by a monarch or dictator.

Proper Etiquette When Reciting the Pledge
- In Full Scout Uniform: Stand at attention, face the flag directly, and render the Scout salute with your right hand. Maintain the salute from the first word until the last word is completed.
- In Civilian Clothes or Activity Uniform: Stand at attention, remove any hat or headgear with your right hand, face the flag, and place your right hand flat over your heart.
- When No Flag Is Visible: If reciting the pledge indoors where no flag is present, turn and face toward the front of the room or the speaker.
