Describe First Class badge

Even before earning the First Class rank, every Scout in Scouts BSA wears the First Class emblem on their uniform hat, belt buckle, and council shoulder strips. The First Class badge is the universal symbol of the Scouting movement in the United States, carefully designed with rich historical symbolism in every element.

The Parts of the First Class Badge and Their Meanings

The Trefoil (Fleur-de-lis / Three-Pointed Design)

• The Compass Needle: The three-pointed shape is styled after the traditional arrowhead on early mariner’s compasses. It symbolizes that a Scout leads the way and points the true path in life as dependably as a compass points north.
• The Three Points: Directly correspond to the three promises of the Scout Oath:
  • Center Point: Duty to God and Country.
  • Left Point: Duty to Others (helping other people at all times).
  • Right Point: Duty to Self (keeping physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight).

The Two Stars

• Truth and Knowledge: The two five-pointed stars represent the guiding lights of Truth and Knowledge, helping Scouts make wise moral choices.
• The Outdoor Life: They also symbolize the stars of the night sky, recalling Scouting’s outdoor spirit and wilderness adventure.

The Eagle and Shield

• National Freedom: The American Bald Eagle and the red, white, and blue shield are the national emblems of the United States.
• Patriotism & Service: They stand for freedom, good citizenship, and a Scout’s readiness to defend liberty and serve the nation.

The Scroll with the Scout Motto

• The Motto: The ribbon banner at the bottom carries the Scout Motto: “Be Prepared.”
• The Scout’s Smile: The ends of the scroll are intentionally turned upward in a curve, symbolizing that a Scout performs their duties and serves others with a cheerful smile.

The Knotted Cord at the Bottom

• The Scout Slogan: Suspended from the bottom center of the scroll is an overhand knot. It serves as a constant physical reminder of the Scout Slogan: “Do a Good Turn Daily.”
