# Complete 6 hours of service

Part of the Life Scout guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/life/guide/index.md)

> **4.** While a Star Scout, participate in six hours of service through one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. At least three hours of this service must be conservation-related.

Requirement 4 maintains the six-hour service standard from the Star rank, but introduces a new, specialized requirement: **at least three of the six hours must be conservation-related**.

Merit Badge Guide: [Environmental Science Merit Badge Guide](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/environmental-science/guide/): Ecology fieldwork, environmental impact studies, and conservation principles directly relevant to Life rank service projects.

## What Qualifies as Conservation-Related Service?

Conservation service involves hands-on work that directly benefits the natural environment, preserves wildlife habitats, protects ecosystems, or promotes environmental sustainability:

### Qualifying Conservation Projects:
- **Erosion Control & Trail Maintenance**: Repairing eroded public hiking trails, installing water bars, stabilizing stream banks, or building boardwalks over delicate wetlands (pairs well with *[Soil and Water Conservation](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/soil-and-water-conservation/guide/)*).
- **Invasive Species Removal**: Clearing non-native, invasive plant species (such as kudzu, honeysuckle, garlic mustard, or English ivy) under the guidance of a park ranger or conservation biologist.
- **Habitat Restoration & Native Planting**: Planting native trees, shrubs, and pollinator wildflowers in public parks, wildlife refuges, or school nature sanctuaries (pairs well with *[Plant Science](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/plant-science/guide/)*).
- **Watershed & Riparian Cleanup**: Cleaning debris and contaminants from streams, rivers, lakeshores, wetlands, or coastal shorelines (pairs well with *[Sustainability](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/sustainability/guide/)*).
- **Wildlife Structures**: Constructing and installing bird boxes, bat houses, fish habitat structures, or owl nesting platforms in designated conservation areas (pairs well with *[Fish and Wildlife Management](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/fish-and-wildlife-management/guide/)*).

### What Does NOT Qualify as Conservation:
- Routine litter cleanups along paved schoolyards or parking lots (unless part of a broader municipal watershed restoration effort).
- General landscaping, lawn mowing, or weeding at a church or civic building.
- Non-environmental community service, such as food sorting or blood drive support (which qualify for general service hours, but not the 3-hour conservation minimum).

## Structuring Your Six Hours

You can fulfill your six hours in several ways:
- **Option A (Full Conservation)**: Complete all six hours on one or more conservation projects.
- **Option B (Split Service)**: Complete at least three hours on a conservation project, and up to three hours on other Scoutmaster-approved community service projects (such as helping with an Eagle Scout project or volunteering at a food bank).

> **Did You Know?**
>
> Hours spent working on conservation service for Life rank can also contribute toward prestigious Scouting conservation honors, including the Scouting America Conservation Good Turn Award and the Distinguished Conservationist Award.

## Finding and Logging Projects

Work with your Scoutmaster to identify suitable opportunities:
- Local municipal parks departments, county forest preserves, state parks, and national wildlife refuges regularly host volunteer workdays.
- Local land trusts, watershed associations, and nature conservancies.
- Troop or council-organized conservation campouts and workdays.

**Conservation Service Log** — Information to document for Requirement 4

- [ ] Date and location of the project.
- [ ] Benefiting conservation agency, park, or organization.
- [ ] Exact description of the environmental or conservation tasks completed.
- [ ] Total hours worked (specifying conservation vs. general service hours).
- [ ] Contact information of the supervising agency official or Scoutmaster.

> **Tip**
>
> Always secure your Scoutmaster's approval *before* participating in a conservation project. Confirming that the planned work meets the conservation standard avoids any ambiguity when your hours are submitted.
