Serve in position of responsibility

Leadership is the hallmark of an Eagle Scout. Requirement 4 mandates that you serve actively for at least six full months in an approved youth leadership position of responsibility while holding the rank of Life Scout.

Approved Leadership Roles for Scout Troops

Scouting America maintains a strict list of qualifying youth leadership positions for the Eagle Scout rank:

• Senior Patrol Leader (SPL): Top elected youth leader; runs meetings, chairs the PLC, and coordinates troop program.
• Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL): Appointed second-in-command; directs meeting operations, manages appointed staff, and steps in for the SPL.
• Patrol Leader (PL): Elected patrol leader; represents patrol on the PLC and directs patrol activities and camping logistics.
• Troop Guide: Senior mentor assigned to guide a new-Scout patrol toward First Class advancement.
• Troop Order of the Arrow Representative (OA Rep): Coordinates OA elections, service projects, and chapter/lodge participation.
• Scribe: Troop administrative officer; manages meeting attendance, dues, and PLC minutes.
• Quartermaster: Equipment manager; maintains troop gear inventory, campsite trailers, and tool maintenance.
• Historian: Preserves troop history, photo archives, social archives, and annual displays.
• Librarian: Organizes and manages the troop lending library of merit badge pamphlets and books.
• Webmaster: Manages the troop website, digital communication platforms, and online calendar under Youth Protection standards.
• Chaplain Aide: Coordinates non-denominational Scouts’ Own services, promotes reverence, and supports unit members.
• Outdoor Ethics Guide: Teaches and enforces Leave No Trace principles, Tread Lightly! ethics, and the Outdoor Code.
• Junior Assistant Scoutmaster (JASM): For youth at least 16 years old; provides advanced leadership and mentorship under the Scoutmaster’s direction.
• Instructor: Instructs Scouts in specific scoutcraft, pioneering, navigation, or first aid skills.
• Den Chief: Serves as a youth leader and role model assisting a Cub Scout den leader with weekly den meetings and activities.

Critical Exclusions for the Eagle Rank

The rules for Eagle Scout leadership are strictly defined in Footnote 11 and the Guide to Advancement (topic 4.2.3.4.4):

Venturing, Sea Scout, and Lone Scout Positions

• Venturing Crew: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Historian, Den Chief, Treasurer, Guide, Quartermaster, Chaplain Aide, or Outdoor Ethics Guide.
• Sea Scout Ship: Boatswain, Boatswain’s Mate, Storekeeper, Purser, Yeoman, Crew Leader, Media Specialist, Specialist, Den Chief, or Chaplain Aide.
• Lone Scout: Leadership responsibility in your school (e.g., student body officer), religious institution, club, or community organization.

Demonstrating “Active Service” Over Six Months

Serving actively requires executing the duties of your office with consistency, diligence, and accountability:

1. Understand Your Position: Work with your Scoutmaster or SPL to clarify all expectations at the beginning of your term.
2. Consistent Performance: Attend troop meetings, PLC meetings, and campouts, fulfilling your responsibilities for the full six months.
3. Combining Positions: You may combine time served across multiple approved positions (e.g., three months as Patrol Leader followed by three months as Troop Guide) to reach your six-month total.
