# Be active 6 months

Part of the Eagle Scout guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/guide/index.md)

> **1.** Be active in your troop for at least six months as a Life Scout.

Requirement 1 establishes the final active tenure milestone: **at least six months of continuous active participation as a Life Scout**.

## Defining "Active Participation" Under the Guide to Advancement

According to the *Guide to Advancement* (topic 4.2.3.1), active participation is determined by three clear national standards:

1. **Official Registration**: You must be currently registered in your unit (troop, crew, or ship) and in good standing with Scouting America.
2. **Good Standing**: You adhere to the Scout Oath and Scout Law, unit policies, and safety rules.
3. **Meeting Unit Participation Expectations**: You attend unit meetings, outdoor activities, campouts, and service projects with reasonable consistency.

> **Did You Know?**
>
> The *Guide to Advancement* explicitly states that units cannot establish rigid mathematical attendance percentages (e.g., "must attend 80% of all meetings") as an absolute barrier to advancement. If academic commitments, sports seasons, or family responsibilities temporarily reduce your attendance, communicate with your Scoutmaster proactively to maintain agreed-upon active engagement.

## Calculating the Six-Month Tenure Window

- **Start Date**: The clock starts on the date you successfully passed your **Life Scout Board of Review**.
- **Elapsed Time**: Exactly six calendar months must elapse before your Eagle Scout rank application can be certified. For example, if you earned Life on January 15, your six-month active tenure requirement is satisfied on July 15.
- **Concurrent Requirements**: While completing your six months of active tenure, you will work concurrently on your remaining merit badges ([Requirement 3](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/guide/req3/)), your position of responsibility ([Requirement 4](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/guide/req4/)), and your Eagle Scout Service Project ([Requirement 5](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/guide/req5/)).

## Leading as a Life Scout

During these six months, your role within the troop reaches its highest maturity:
- **Set the Standard**: Model punctuality, complete uniforming, outdoor ethics, and cheerful service.
- **Support Unit Leadership**: Work alongside your Senior Patrol Leader, mentoring newer patrol leaders and assisting with meeting planning and execution.
- **Foster Patrol Spirit**: Ensure your patrol functions effectively and that younger Scouts feel supported in their advancement.

**Active Life Scout Checklist** — Habits for your six-month Eagle tenure

- [ ] Maintain consistent attendance at troop meetings and monthly campouts.
- [ ] Serve actively and visibly in your approved leadership position.
- [ ] Mentor younger Scouts working toward Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class.
- [ ] Proactively communicate with adult leaders regarding project timelines and scheduling.

> **Tip**
>
> Verify the exact date of your Life board of review on your official Scouts BSA advancement profile in Scoutbook or Internet Advancement. This exact date must be recorded on line 1 of your Eagle Scout Rank Application.
