Overview

Eagle Scout is the highest and most revered rank in Scouts BSA, earned by only about six percent of all youth who enter the Scouting program. Achieving Eagle represents years of dedicated effort, outdoor mastery, servant leadership, citizenship, and personal character development.

The Eagle Scout journey brings together every skill and value you have cultivated since joining Scouting. You will complete 21 merit badges, serve actively for at least six months in an approved youth leadership position, conceptualize, plan, fund, and lead an extensive service project for your community, prepare written statements and references, complete a comprehensive Scoutmaster conference, and successfully pass an Eagle Scout Board of Review.

The Seven Requirements for Eagle Scout

  1. Active Tenure as a Life Scout (Requirement 1): Be active in your troop, crew, or ship for at least six months after earning the Life rank.
  2. Scout Spirit & Reference Recommendations (Requirement 2): Live the Scout Oath and Law in your daily life, articulate your Duty to God, and list reference individuals on your Eagle Scout Rank Application.
  3. 21 Merit Badges (Requirement 3): Earn a total of 21 merit badges, including all 13 Eagle-required categories.
  4. Youth Leadership in a Position of Responsibility (Requirement 4): Serve actively for six months in an approved leadership position (note: Bugler, Assistant Patrol Leader, and leadership projects are not eligible).
  5. The Eagle Scout Service Project (Requirement 5): Plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to a religious institution, school, or community organization using the official workbook.
  6. Scoutmaster Conference (Requirement 6): Complete a unit leader conference reviewing your readiness and application packet.
  7. Eagle Scout Board of Review (Requirement 7): Submit a Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose, leadership/honors listing, and successfully pass an Eagle Scout Board of Review.

The Eagle Roadmap & Timeline

Because the Eagle rank involves multi-step approval workflows, detailed project planning, and time-bound requirements, disciplined project management is critical:

  • The Six-Month Window: Your tenure (Requirement 1) and position of responsibility (Requirement 4) require a minimum of six months after earning Life.
  • The 18th Birthday Milestone: All requirements (Requirements 1 through 6, your project, application paperwork, and statement of ambitions) must be completed before your 18th birthday (unless an official council time extension is granted under Guide to Advancement topic 9.0.4.0).
  • The Board of Review Window: Your Eagle Scout Board of Review may occur before or within 24 months after your 18th birthday without special council approval (Guide to Advancement topic 8.0.3.1).
