# Scouting University > Your guide to Scouting America rank requirements. The full text in one file: [llms-full.txt](https://scouting.university/llms-full.txt) ## Ranks - [Scout](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/scout/index.md): Scout is the first rank in Scouts BSA, earned by learning the Scout Oath and Law, the Scout motto and slogan, and the basics of patrol life — from a proper salute and handshake to the buddy system and personal safety awareness. It sets the foundation everything else in the program builds on. - [Tenderfoot](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/tenderfoot/index.md): Tenderfoot is the first rank earned through real time in the outdoors, requiring a Scout to demonstrate physical fitness, basic camping and cooking skills, and knot-tying, while continuing to grow as an active member of a patrol and troop. - [Second Class](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/second-class/index.md): Second Class builds directly on Tenderfoot, asking a Scout to navigate with a map and compass, plan and cook a patrol meal, and demonstrate a deeper set of outdoor and first-aid skills — the point at which a Scout starts operating with real independence on a campout. - [First Class](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/first-class/index.md): First Class has long been considered the rank that makes a ‘complete’ Scout: it rounds out core outdoor skills like cooking, camping, and swimming, and asks a Scout to put them to use leading and teaching younger Scouts in the troop. - [Star Scout](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/star/index.md): Star Scout is the first of the leadership ranks, opening the path toward Eagle. It requires sustained active membership, a position of responsibility in the troop, a growing count of merit badges, and a service project, marking the shift from learning skills to leading with them. - [Life Scout](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/life/index.md): Life Scout deepens the leadership and merit badge requirements first introduced at Star, asking a Scout to serve longer in a position of responsibility, earn more merit badges, and complete another service project — the last rank before Eagle. - [Eagle Scout](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/index.md): Eagle Scout is Scouts BSA’s highest rank, earned through a required set of merit badges, sustained leadership in a position of responsibility, and a self-planned and led service project that benefits a community organization — a capstone most Scouts pursue over several years. ## Guides - [Scout Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/scout/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Scout rank requirement. - [Tenderfoot Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/tenderfoot/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Tenderfoot rank requirement. - [Second Class Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/second-class/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Second Class rank requirement. - [First Class Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/first-class/guide/index.md): Study guide for each First Class rank requirement. - [Star Scout Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/star/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Star Scout rank requirement. - [Life Scout Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/life/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Life Scout rank requirement. - [Eagle Scout Digital Requirements Guide](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/ranks/eagle/guide/index.md): Study guide for each Eagle Scout rank requirement. - [Field Guides & Outdoor Skills](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/field-guides/index.md): Quick-reference outdoor guides for Scouting America: knots and lashings, wilderness first aid, camp cooking, Dutch ovens, map navigation, and weather. - [Camp Cooking & Kitchen Guide: Stoves, Dutch Ovens & Clean-Up](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/field-guides/camp-cooking/index.md): How to cook great meals at camp: kitchen setup, the 200-foot bear triangle, 3-pot dishwashing, and Dutch oven heat charts. - [Knots & Lashings Guide: Hitches, Bends & Camp Gadgets](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/field-guides/knots-and-lashings/index.md): A step-by-step technical guide to tying the core scouting knots, pioneering lashings, rope care, whipping, and fusing. - [Navigation & Weather Guide: Maps, Compasses & Forecasting](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/field-guides/navigation-and-weather/index.md): How to find your way in the backcountry: reading topographic maps, using a baseplate compass, calculating declination, and reading clouds for weather. - [Wilderness First Aid Guide: Handling Outdoor Emergencies](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/field-guides/wilderness-first-aid/index.md): A practical guide to wilderness emergency response: checking injured patients with MARCH PAWS, treating trauma, hypothermia wraps, and calling for help. - [Youth Leadership Hub](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/leadership/index.md): How youth leadership works in Scouting America: patrol roles, troop meetings, the PLC, the EDGE method, and guides for Patrol Leaders and Eagle candidates. - [Eagle Scout Service Project Guide: How to Plan and Lead Your Project](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/leadership/eagle-project-workbook/index.md): Everything you need to know about Requirement 5: filling out the project workbook, getting approvals, leading volunteers on workday, and finishing your report. - [How to Plan Your Eagle Merit Badges](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/leadership/merit-badge-strategy/index.md): Learn how to plan and pace your 21 merit badges for Eagle Scout on our sister site, Merit Badge University. - [Patrol Leader Guide: How to Run a Great Patrol](https://scouting.university/scouts-bsa/leadership/patrol-method/index.md): A practical guide for Patrol Leaders: how to build patrol spirit, make rotating duty rosters, plan campout meals, and keep your campsite organized. ## Optional - [Search Requirements](https://scouting.university/search/): Full-text search across every rank requirement and guide.
